Full Service Postcard Stand

HOWL! 2005

photos by Mike Raisler and Dana Teasdale.

This was the first performance of the Full Service Postcard Stand. We set up along the walkway at Tompkins Square Park at 11AM on Saturday, August 27th, ran through our stash of prepared postcards by 4PM, and continued on until 6:30 making custom orders. We scrambled until 3AM preparing more postcards for Sunday, set up again at 11AM, ran out of prepared cards by 4PM, and continued on with custom orders, through some light rain, until the sunlight disappeared at 7:30. We estimate that we made between 120 and 130 postcards over both days, of which 100 were successfully documented. All the postcards were taken to a Manhattan Post Office on Tuesday, August 30th, for delivery as far away as South America, Europe, China and Australia.

Thank you to all those who were able to participate in this project, and thank you, very much, to the HOWL! festival for including our project in their wonderful program.

August 27th, Saturday...

... and August 28th, Sunday.

Dax, making a personalized postcard.

... and submitting it for approval.

MacKenzie, taking dictation on typewriter.

The work space.

The crowd. We were horrifically busy both days, working on through each afternoon without a break.

So successful were we that we quickly fell behind on orders;
this lovely passerby sat down for an hour or so to help us make more cards.

Suggested donation was a paltry $1 per card, which helped us cover postage and materials.
Our great thanks to those who supported us with a little more.

... and another wonderful shot of Kenz showing off her period administrative assistant look.
