Drawing from photographs is not usually my cup of tea, but I couldn't deter myself from sketching some peoples' pictures on myspace.com. I like these photos because internet profile pictures are usually made to attract attention in a sea of thumbnails, so they are inherently visually alluring. I know that the person likes how they look in such a photo, that it looks sufficiently like them, and that they are well composed at the small scale. These are quite the majority of considerations that go into any painted portrait, and since they're all being done for me, all I have to do is paint. That said, I still sift through several hundred thumbnails for a single composition that I'm interested in copying, and even then I have to reject a majority because the photograph is of poor quality. The big question is whether or not to let these people know that I've made a watercolor of them, having stared intently at their face, possibly for several hours, without their knowledge.
